A euro pillow is the big square that sits against the headboard behind your sleeping pillows. It's the one size most people get wrong, and the one that makes the biggest difference in how finished a bed looks. This guide covers exactly how big a euro pillow is, how many you need for every mattress size, which insert to buy, and how to layer them so the bed looks designed rather than just made.
What size is a euro pillow?
A standard euro pillow is 26 x 26 inches. The cover that goes over it is called a euro sham, and it's made to the same 26 x 26 dimension. That's the size hotels use and the size most bedding lines are cut to.
You'll also see 24 x 24 euro pillows, which are a touch smaller and work well on queen beds or lower headboards where a full 26-inch square would sit too tall. And for oversized upholstered headboards, a 28 x 28 reads more in proportion.
| Euro size | Best for | Insert to buy |
|---|---|---|
| 24 x 24 | Queen beds, lower headboards, tighter rooms | 26 x 26 |
| 26 x 26 (standard) | Queen and king beds, most headboards | 28 x 28 |
| 28 x 28 | King and California king, tall or oversized headboards | 28 x 28 or 30 x 30 |
Euro pillow vs. euro sham vs. euro insert
These three terms get used interchangeably, which causes most of the confusion:
- Euro insert is the pillow form itself, the stuffed square that gives the shape.
- Euro sham is the decorative cover that goes over the insert, usually with a zipper or envelope back.
- Euro pillow is the finished pair together, though people often use it to mean either one.
New to the term? Our guide to what a pillow sham is explains how shams differ from pillowcases and pillow covers.
When you're shopping, you're buying two things: a cover in the size you want the pillow to look, and an insert sized up so the cover fills out. Which brings us to the most important rule.
The insert rule: always size up two inches
A 26 x 26 cover on a 26 x 26 insert looks flat. The corners droop, the center sags, and the whole bed reads tired. For a full, plump euro that stands up on its own, put a 28 x 28 insert inside a 26 x 26 cover. For a 24 x 24 cover, use a 26 x 26 insert.
Our down alternative inserts come in every euro size (24, 26, and 28) and hold their shape better than feather for a headboard pillow that gets leaned on. They're hypoallergenic and machine-washable. If you prefer real down, size up the same way. Browse the full range in our pillow insert collection.
How many euro pillows do you need?
The number depends on mattress width, and the goal is a row of squares that spans the headboard without overlapping or leaving gaps at the edges.
| Bed size | Mattress width | Euro pillows | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" | 1 | 26 x 26 |
| Full | 54" | 2 | 24 x 24 or 26 x 26 |
| Queen | 60" | 2 | 26 x 26 |
| King | 76" | 3 | 26 x 26 |
| California king | 72" | 3 | 24 x 24 or 26 x 26 |
Three 26-inch euros across a 76-inch king leaves a little breathing room at each edge, which is exactly what you want. Two on a queen do the same. If you're working with a king and want a fuller look, three 28 x 28 euros fill the width edge to edge. We go deeper on king layouts in our king bed pillow guide and on queens in what size pillows for a queen bed.
How to layer euro pillows
Euros are the back row. Everything else stacks in front of them, and each layer steps down in size so you see a bit of every pillow.
- Euros against the headboard. Two or three 26 x 26 squares standing upright. Use a solid or subtle texture here since this row is mostly a backdrop.
- Sleeping pillows. Your standard or king pillows in shams or pillowcases, laid flat or propped in front of the euros.
- Decorative squares. Two 22 x 22 or 20 x 20 covers in front of the sleeping pillows. This is where pattern lives.
- Lumbar. One 14 x 36 or 12 x 48 lumbar centered in front to finish the row.
The mistake to avoid is putting the loudest print on the euros. They're the largest surface on the bed, so a busy pattern there overwhelms everything in front. Keep euros calm and let the 22-inch squares carry the color.
Euro pillow covers that work as the back row
These are covers from our own collection, sewn in the USA, that we reach for when styling euros. Each is offered in 26 x 26 and pairs with a 28 x 28 insert.
- Luca Noir — hand block-printed linen in black on natural. A quiet pattern that reads as texture from across the room.
- Tye Basalt — a soft charcoal geometric on linen. Grounds a light bedding set without going stark.
- Olive Green Velvet — solid velvet in a deep moss. The easiest way to add richness to a cream or white duvet.
- Faux Leather in Cognac — warm, structured, and unexpected. Pairs beautifully with natural linen and wool throws.
- Georgia — a fine rust windowpane check on cream. Traditional without being fussy.
- Black and White Farmhouse Stripe — the classic. Works in coastal, farmhouse, and modern rooms alike.

Quick answers
Can I use a 26 x 26 insert in a 26 x 26 cover? You can, but it will look flat. Size up to 28 x 28.
Are euro shams the same as euro pillow covers? Yes. "Sham" is the traditional bedding term; "cover" is what most pillow brands call it. Same thing.
Do euro pillows go behind or in front of sleeping pillows? Behind. They lean against the headboard and everything else layers in front.
What if my headboard is low? Use 24 x 24 euros so the tops don't sit above the headboard line.
